Ingredients

Crust
  • 2 pieces pre-made pie crusts (or homemade if you prefer)
Filling
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 cup pepperoni slices
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz) with juice
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • to taste Salt and pepper
Optional Toppings
  • to taste Fresh basil or parsley for garnish
  • to taste Sliced olives or bell peppers

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by cooking your meat. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and sausage, breaking it up with a spoon. Once cooked through (about 6–8 minutes), drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet. Cook until the onion is translucent, which will take about 3–4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the diced tomatoes (with juice), pepperoni, Italian seasoning, and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.
Building and Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place one pie crust on the bottom of a deep pie dish or a glass baking pan.
  2. Pour the meat mixture evenly into the crust.
  3. Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar on top of the filling.
  4. Cover with the second pie crust. Cut a few slits into the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  5. Bake the pie for about 45–50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  6. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before slicing to ensure that everything stays together nicely.

Notes

This pie can be prepared in advance and frozen. Bake it for about 20–30 minutes longer if cooking from frozen. Serve with a fresh salad or garlic bread for a complete meal.
