What Does Purple Paint Mean?

The idea behind purple paint markings is straightforward.

Large farms, ranches, forests, and other rural properties can cover hundreds or even thousands of acres. Maintaining traditional signs along every section of a property boundary may be inconvenient and expensive.

Where state law allows it, specially placed purple paint marks can provide an alternative form of notice.

Texas Provides a Clear Example

Texas law specifically includes qualifying purple paint marks on trees or posts among the ways a property owner can provide notice that entry is forbidden.

Under Texas Penal Code §30.05, qualifying marks must consist of vertical lines at least eight inches long and one inch wide. The bottom of the mark must be between three and five feet above the ground, and the marks must be readily visible to people approaching the property. This means that simply painting a random purple stripe on a tree does not necessarily satisfy the legal requirements.
